Onlookers were seen taking pictures as well as chatting with the drivers of the cars that had been restored to immaculate conditions.

It was good that it was sunny and warm as the vehicles were lined up outside the Old Town Hall on Saturday. They also made a stopover at Telfords garage in Kingstown.

The 41 Citroens out of which some were built as far back as 1919, were driven from the Netherlands, via Newcastle and Gretna Green, before heading to the Great Border City. The owners take them to various places across Europe every year.

Aad Meijd, 52, from Maasland, in Holland, was seen sitting on the running board of his car while his three-year-old son slept in the back.

Aad said: “I like driving classic cars because you can forget all other things in your life.

“I started because of my father in law – he infected me. Carlisle is a nice city with good people.”
